A+ product pages / PRODUCTION GUIDE
How do you describe an A+ diagram in alt text without keyword stuffing?
Describe what the A+ diagram helps someone understand, rather than filling its alternate description with shopping terms. A useful short description identifies the diagram and its main relationship. Keep essential measurements or a complicated sequence available in supported ordinary text as well, then check that the description still matches the exact image uploaded.
Name the relationship the diagram communicates
Start with the buyer question behind the module. A dimensions drawing relates a measurement to a particular edge; an assembly drawing relates parts in an order; an included-items drawing distinguishes supplied objects from demonstration props. Naming the product alone can miss that information. Describing every background color can bury it.
Consider a hypothetical desk organizer diagram showing the outer width and a narrower opening. The useful relationship is that these are different measurements of the same object. A phrase describing a white organizer on a gray background would identify the scene without communicating that distinction. Write the informational purpose before choosing the alternate wording.
Separate a short identifier from essential detail
Amazon’s official guidance calls for descriptive alternate text. For complex information, W3C WAI explains short identification plus a fuller text alternative. These sources support the communication distinction; they do not mean Amazon exposes every general web technique or description field in every module.
Use the actual fields supported in your Amazon account. Put the essential verified dimensions or sequence in suitable ordinary text where available, and make the short image description consistent with that explanation. If the module cannot carry the required information accessibly, simplify the diagram or select another supported arrangement instead of squeezing a whole specification sheet into the alternate field.
Build a diagram description worksheet
Keep the worksheet beside the approved copy and artwork. It should describe relationships rather than rank keywords. The following examples are hypothetical and assume the underlying product facts have been checked. Adapt them to the actual image; do not copy a feature that your diagram does not show.
| Diagram | Short description direction | Information to preserve separately |
|---|---|---|
| External versus usable width | Drawing distinguishes outer width from opening clearance | Verified values and which edges they measure |
| Three assembly stages | Diagram shows the base, divider and lid in order | Approved step sequence and any required condition |
| Package contents | Diagram separates supplied pieces from display props | Exact included-item list and exclusions |
Use clear product terminology that matches the accompanying native copy.
Worked fictional O6 example: approved drawing D3 distinguishes a 240 mm outer width from a 180 mm clear opening. A short description draft is “O6 organizer width diagram; outer width and clear opening are distinguished.” The accompanying ordinary-text draft is “Outer width: 240 mm across the outside faces. Clear opening: 180 mm between the inner edges shown. These measure different spans.” Values are invented to demonstrate wording; obtain actual approved values and edge definitions before using this pair. Neither line establishes that every object 180 mm wide fits: tolerances, depth and obstructions would need their own evidence.
Review the description against the final crop
Open the exact upload file and read the description without looking at earlier drafts. Does it mention an arrow that was removed, a second view that was cropped out, or a dimension from the previous product edition? Fix the mismatched file or description before handoff. An accurate phrase cannot repair an inaccurate generated number inside the diagram.
CartVisual produces a visual concept and does not set Amazon alternate text automatically. Prepare the short and fuller descriptions in your own external publishing record, then enter them through supported destination fields. Do not assume that Amazon permits an HTML long-description link or custom ARIA association from W3C’s general-web examples. Verify the current field limits there; this guide does not prescribe a universal character count or claim that alternate wording produces a particular search result.
Now suppose an upload crop D4 removes the clear-opening arrows. The old short description claiming both spans no longer matches that image. Restore the intended complete drawing or describe the final crop honestly, keeping any still-needed opening information available in supported ordinary text. Do not silently claim an absent arrow is visible, and do not remove an essential purchasing fact merely to match a decorative crop. Check the actual destination fields and assistive presentation where available; this worksheet has not been tested in Amazon or with a screen reader.
Tie the descriptions to a module version
Assign the approved diagram and its description the same version label in your external record. Include the product edition, module purpose, native explanation and evidence for essential values. When any arrow, relationship or value changes, review the description alongside the artwork. Reusing an old description silently can undo an otherwise careful module update.
Use the general image metadata guide for naming and routine photographs, and the dimension distinction guide for measurement meaning. This worksheet addresses diagram relationships and essential information. It complements the choice of where visible copy lives rather than repeating that layout decision.

Frequently asked questions
Should I put every measurement in the short alt field?
Keep essential values available in supported ordinary text and use a description suited to the actual field and diagram.
Can alternate wording correct a wrong generated diagram?
No. Correct or reject the image first, then describe the approved version.
Does CartVisual populate Amazon alt text for me?
Prepare descriptions in your own external publishing record and enter them through the destination’s supported fields. Review them against the exact approved image; this guide is not an automatic alt-text export.
