Assets & tasks / FIELD GUIDE
How should campaign links identify the exact creative asset?
Use a stable naming map between the published asset and the campaign link. A label such as “new-ad” stops being useful after the next revision. Keep public tracking values free of private account identifiers and customer information.
Assign an editorial asset identity
For an illustrative lamp launch, identify the approved visual as lamp-desk-A-v2 and record the publication destination separately. A version label distinguishes the asset without revealing an internal user ID or generation receipt. Keep the private source record outside the public URL.
Google Analytics documents campaign parameters including source, medium and campaign. Decide a consistent convention for the campaign and creative labels your reporting setup supports. A parameter does not automatically install analytics or prove that the visit was measured.
Maintain a link register
| Field | Illustrative value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | lamp-launch | Shared initiative |
| Source | newsletter | Origin label |
| Medium | Distribution type | |
| Creative reference | desk-A-v2 | Approved asset map |
These are examples for a register, not a ready-to-send production URL. Use the actual destination and the analytics owner’s convention. Check capitalization and spelling to avoid fragmenting reports.
In Google’s documented parameters, utm_content can distinguish creatives. The editorial label alone does not become a report dimension unless the measurement setup supports it. Google also notes that utm_creative_format is not currently reported; do not substitute that parameter and promise a visible report.
Test the resulting destination
Open the constructed link and verify that its parameters survive expected navigation without changing the chosen product or option. Confirm that the analytics system records a test visit according to its normal permissions and privacy setup. Do not collect extra personal data merely to identify a creative.
Retain the mapping through revisions
When you replace the creative, decide whether the link needs a new version label. Never relabel historical reports as though viewers saw the new asset. Read source tracing and SKU release mapping for the private editorial chain.
One link register, two distributed versions
Fictional register: edition E1 used lamp-desk-A-v1; E2 used lamp-desk-A-v2. Both target the slate option. This is a proposed mapping, not an actual newsletter, store URL or measured visit.
| Edition and approved file | Public content label | Record after distribution |
|---|---|---|
| E1 / lamp-desk-A-v1 | desk-a-v1 | Keep original distributed asset and label |
| E2 / lamp-desk-A-v2 | desk-a-v2 | Save new destination review and publication time |
A teaching URL:
https://example.com/products/lamp?variant=slate&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=lamp-launch&utm_content=desk-a-v2Keep the existing variant parameter when constructing a real link. Check the resolved destination and final option separately from whether the analytics owner observes a visit. Values are case-sensitive: desk-a-v2 and Desk-A-v2 are different labels. Never replace the E1 entry with E2 or put customer/order identifiers into the public parameters.
Sources and further reading
Recorded source-review dates are listed individually below. An undated source does not inherit the article’s publication date. Software and platform rules can change; check the current original before acting.
