Assets & tasks / DECISION CHECK
Why will my iPhone product photo not upload even though it opens normally?
Check the real file format, not just whether your phone can display it. A HEIF or HEIC photo may need a genuine JPEG or PNG export for a tool that accepts PNG, JPG and WebP. Renaming the extension does not convert the image.
Identify the file before retrying
Inspect the photograph’s format and the destination’s current upload guidance. An iPhone can display its own HEIF photograph normally while a browser or upload validator does not accept it. A generic upload error can also come from file size, dimensions or corruption, so record the actual error rather than assuming every failure is HEIC-related.
Apple documents HEIF capture and conversion through supported applications. Export a delivery copy, keeping the original photograph untouched. Avoid sending private product references to an unfamiliar online converter simply because it offers a quick upload.
Make a real compatible export
| Step | Check | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Export from a supported application | Choose a supported actual format | Renaming .heic to .jpg |
| Open the exported file | Correct orientation and readable detail | Assuming conversion preserved everything |
| Inspect dimensions and size | Within current tool limits | Repeated blind retries |
| Upload the delivery copy | Preview matches the intended SKU | Uploading a screenshot with interface clutter |
Apple’s current documentation gives Photos or Preview on a Mac as examples for JPEG or PNG export. Use an equivalent trusted supported workflow on your own device. The conversion itself is external to CartVisual.
In the current CartVisual commerce reference-upload code, the accepted image MIME types are PNG, JPEG and WebP, and each image is limited to 15 × 1024 × 1024 bytes. The file must also decode as an image. These are the inspected commerce-form limits, not a promise that every external upload service has the same rules or that any filename ending in .jpg will pass.
For an existing HEIF image, Apple describes opening it in Photos or Preview on a Mac and exporting to JPEG or PNG. Keep that delivery copy separate from the original. Apple’s Camera → Formats → Most Compatible setting affects new captures; changing it does not convert the file already awaiting upload. This guide supplies no unverified Windows/iPhone conversion menu.
After conversion, distinguish three outcomes: the exported file opens correctly; the destination accepts it; the intended SKU/reference is selected in the form. Each needs its own check. Continue with orientation review if the accepted thumbnail is rotated; a successful conversion is not proof that all source details survived.
Review the evidence after conversion
For a fictional handmade vase reference, inspect the rim, glaze and label in the converted image at full useful size. Check that orientation is correct and that the product color did not change unexpectedly. Do not reduce the file so aggressively that it loses the evidence the generator needs. Keep the original and the compatible upload copy under distinct names.
Close the actual upload
After the supported file is accepted, check its thumbnail and selected order in the generation form. A successful upload does not prove that you selected the right product edition. CartVisual’s documented image reference workflow supports PNG, JPG and WebP; recheck the live interface for limits when using it later. If the compatible file still fails, record its type, dimensions and error without exposing private content in public support posts.

Frequently asked questions
Can I simply rename HEIC to JPG?
No. Export or convert the actual encoded file.
Should I delete the phone original?
Keep it as the source and create a separate compatible copy.
Does every upload error mean unsupported format?
No. Check the actual error, file size, dimensions and integrity.
