Product images / DECISION CHECK
Should my lifestyle photo replace the main image in a Google product feed?
Choose the feed role before replacing the main image. A lifestyle scene, a detail view and an identification packshot answer different buyer questions. Keep one clear product identity and map the supplementary images to documented fields your connector actually supports.
Build the role map before uploading
For an illustrative portable speaker, identify the clean product photograph, rear control view and picnic scene separately. The scene can communicate use while the clean view lets a shopper recognize the exact item. Verify that the picnic accessories are not presented as included. A scene that looks attractive is not automatically the strongest or eligible main feed image.
Google has separate image_link, additional_image_link and lifestyle_image_link specifications. Their accepted uses, limits and presentation differ. Availability in a connector must be checked directly; selecting “scene” in CartVisual does not create a corresponding feed attribute in another application.
Write a field assignment table
| Asset role | Field to evaluate | Critical check |
|---|---|---|
| Main identification | image_link | Exact variant, destination eligibility |
| Other angle or useful close-up | additional_image_link | Same SKU; no contradictory accessories |
| Product in use context | lifestyle_image_link where supported | Authentic context and field support |
Current Google specifications allow up to ten additional images and up to five lifestyle images. These are attribute ceilings, not a recommendation to fill every slot. Recheck the live documentation before a bulk upload. More nearly identical views add work without resolving a new buyer question.
Check the destination role’s own requirements, not just its slot count. The current lifestyle specification states a 600 × 600 minimum; do not approve that role solely because a file passes a different image threshold. Confirm the current aspect-ratio rule directly as well. Additional images can show a useful partial detail or staged use, subject to their own requirements; main-image composition and other roles are not interchangeable.
Test the processed product record
Prepare three distinctly named files and change one sample product through the normal feed process. Inspect the resulting attributes in the processed product, not only the source sheet. If the connector silently places every URL into image_link, stop the bulk rollout. Fix the mapping rather than generating additional scenes to compensate.
Review each field’s delivered image for factual consistency and provenance. If a macro view contains invented screws, exclude it even when the field mapping is correct.
Fictional role record: speaker front S1 identifies the blue SKU; rear-controls S2 resolves a control-layout question; picnic scene S3 shows use, with the tableware explicitly outside the sold contents. Write the expected field and exact URL for each. If the processed main attribute contains S3 despite the plan naming S1, stop and resolve the mapping before adding more images. Keep an unsupported lifestyle field as unsupported rather than silently relabeling its payload.
Keep publishing intent with the asset
Record SKU, version, role, permitted destination and approval. A hero banner may remain useful for the storefront even if it is unsuitable for the main Shopping image. CartVisual produces creative candidates; your publishing workflow decides their eligible external roles. Revisit the map when packaging, included parts or the sold variant changes.
Give every retained image a distinct buyer question. Two near-identical front views do not become separate evidence because both fit the available slots. Conversely, do not discard a useful control close-up simply because it is unsuitable as the main identification photo. Keep a separate storefront/advertising role for assets awaiting feed eligibility, and record actual processed results when the authorized connector test is performed.

Frequently asked questions
Should I fill every image slot?
Use distinct helpful evidence rather than a target count.
Does a scene setting submit lifestyle_image_link?
No. Map and validate it through your actual feed connector.
Can one generic scene cover all colors?
Check the pictured variant against each product record before using it.
