Packaging studio / SCENARIO GUIDE
How to brief sustainable-looking packaging without unsupported claims
Write the desired look and the verified material facts separately. A brown paper look is a style choice. Recycled content, recyclability and compostability are different claims about the real pack. Keep each claim out of final artwork until the relevant evidence and wording have been checked.
Start with a box whose facts are still unknown
Imagine a fictional tea box: brown surface, dark ink and a simple leaf motif. The supplier has not yet confirmed the board or coating. You can explore that look, but you cannot call this box recycled or compostable from the picture.
Put the visual request in the brief: Brown paper look, dark ink, no claim badge. Keep a separate fact record: Board, coating and insert still to be confirmed. These are suggested notes, not extra CartVisual fields. A decorative leaf should not be made to look like an official seal.
Ask a different question for each claim
| Proposed claim | Question to resolve | What is not proof |
|---|---|---|
| Recycled content | What content does the supplier establish for this material? | Brown color or visible fibers |
| Recyclable | How is this actual pack handled in its intended market? | A recycling-shaped icon |
| Compostable | Which verified conditions and scope apply to this pack? | A leaf or natural-looking finish |
| Certified material | Is this exact wording or mark authorized for this use? | An AI-generated seal |
Packhelp’s sustainability hub lists separate material properties and validation programs. Use those categories to organize supplier questions. Its definitions, thresholds and programs do not establish what your own box contains or which marks you may use.
Make the visual concept without filling factual gaps
- Select the proposed structure in Packaging studio.
- Describe the visual surface and print treatment.
- Supply only approved factual copy in the copy fields.
- Leave unconfirmed percentages, seals and material claims out.
- Inspect every generated panel for invented words and badges.
For the fictional tea box, keep the leaf as a plain design motif and leave room for later approved wording. If the result adds a recycled percentage, remove or correct it. A plausible number is not a completed supplier check.
Choosing the workbench’s recycled-board material describes a concept treatment. It does not test the supplier’s board or certify the pack. Use panel hierarchy to place approved copy after deciding what the evidence supports.
Check the whole pack before approving the words
Ask the supplier about the actual board, coating, window, glue and insert. One component can change how the whole pack should be described. Keep the exact specification and intended market beside the proposed wording.
Return to the fictional box after the board is confirmed. If the coating and insert are still unknown, keep those claims on hold. A document for an earlier board does not settle the revised pack. Have a suitable reviewer confirm the final wording and any permitted mark for the actual product and destination.
Release the artwork that was actually checked
Compare the final artwork and sample with the approved fact record. Remove claims left from an old draft, another variant or a different supplier. Identify the artwork version that received approval.
CartVisual helps explore the visual direction; it does not certify materials or assess environmental compliance. This is a design handoff checklist, not a legal determination. Keep the supplier evidence and final review with the production files, rather than treating an attractive image as that evidence.

Frequently asked questions
Does a kraft appearance mean the box contains recycled material?
No. Confirm the actual material with evidence from its supplier. Color and texture alone do not establish content.
Does selecting recycled board in CartVisual certify it?
No. It guides the concept’s material appearance. It does not test or certify the real board.
Can I use recyclable and compostable as the same claim?
No. They concern different properties and conditions. Have the actual pack and intended wording checked for its destination.
