Packaging studio / PRODUCTION GUIDE
What should a packaging QR code open after the product ships?
Choose the QR destination for the life of the printed package, not only for launch week. Record who controls the address, which product version it describes and what happens when a campaign ends. Verify the real code and its online journey separately; a code that scans successfully can still open the wrong or obsolete information.
Choose the customer’s reason to scan
Imagine an illustrative coffee brewer whose box carries Scan for setup. At launch, the code opens a promotional page with a temporary discount. Months later, a buyer scans the same printed box expecting assembly instructions. The code may still work technically while failing the promise made beside it. The destination decision begins with that promise, not with generating a symbol.
Define whether the customer needs instructions, care information, product details or an optional campaign. Identify the actual product edition and language requirements. Keep essential on-pack information under its applicable requirements; moving material online does not automatically permit removing it from the physical package.
Separate the printed address from its current content
GS1’s on-pack QR support article describes using a Digital Link URI so linked information can change without necessarily replacing the printed code. That is a standards-based approach; an ordinary URL in a QR code does not by itself establish a GS1 Digital Link implementation or a traceability system.
Choose an address the business can maintain. Record the domain owner and any redirect service, including what happens if access ends. A lasting printed address still depends on those services being maintained. Updating a page is also different from having authority over someone else’s domain.
Create a destination-lifecycle record
| Question | Decision to preserve | Check after launch |
|---|---|---|
| What does the panel promise? | Exact scan-purpose wording | Destination still fulfills it |
| Which edition does it describe? | Product and instruction version | Older packs retain correct guidance |
| Who controls the address? | Named domain and content owners | Access and renewals remain assigned |
| What happens after an offer? | Approved lasting destination | Expired promotion does not strand buyers |
Add the real encoded address, code artwork filename and final packaging revision. Keep the content owner distinct from the person who designed the box. This external record makes the maintenance obligation visible when a campaign team or supplier changes.
Test the whole journey with the actual package
Scan the verified production code using ordinary phones and relevant network conditions. Check where redirects end, whether the page opens without an unintended login and whether the product name matches the printed version. Test the page on a phone, including any instruction download. A desktop screenshot of the destination is insufficient when the customer arrives through a mobile scan.
For the brewer, keep an older box available while updating the current product page. Confirm that a revision to new-model instructions has not overwritten guidance needed by owners of the earlier model. Record the observed destination and date. These are functional merchant checks, not a certification of code quality or universal device compatibility.
Fictional brewer edition B1 promises “Scan for setup.” Its printed address routes to a launch offer. After that offer ends, proposal A sends every scan to B2’s new manual; proposal B keeps B1 setup available and places any current offer beside it. Choose B’s edition-correct journey. B1’s printed promise did not change when the promotion ended.
| Event | Maintenance action | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Launch offer expires | Keep the promised B1 setup path available | Final mobile destination and instruction edition |
| B2 product launches | Provide a clear edition choice or retain B1 routing | Old box and B1 guide still agree |
| Redirect provider changes | Confirm control and the new routing before switching | Exact printed address and end destination |
| Domain renewal owner leaves | Assign a new responsible owner | Access and renewal responsibility, without publishing credentials |
The table is an invented planning example, not a scan test. Before a real change, use the actual code from an older box and inspect the full journey, including downloads and redirects. Do not label a destination permanent merely because it worked once. A maintenance record needs an owner who can act when the product, address or service changes.
Keep concept placement and live-code maintenance separate
In Packaging studio, reserve the intended code area and scan-purpose wording in the concept. Generated code-like marks are placeholders. For this handoff, obtain the actual code asset and maintained destination from the responsible external system, then verify the printed sample. A generated concept is not evidence that the live route exists.
Use the barcode-space guide for physical placement and scanning quality. Keep the lifecycle record beside the packaging approval record, then review it whenever instructions, editions or campaigns change. Updating the destination is an operational responsibility even when no new artwork or AI generation is required.

Recorded source-review dates are listed individually below. An undated source does not inherit the article’s publication date. Software and platform rules can change; check the current original before acting.

Frequently asked questions
Does a successful scan prove the destination is correct?
No. Check the final page, product edition, promised information and mobile access after any redirects.
Is any URL-based QR code a GS1 Digital Link?
No. GS1 Digital Link has identifier and standards requirements; an ordinary URL does not establish that implementation.
Who must own the live destination after the artwork is approved?
Assign responsible owners for the domain, redirect service and edition-correct content. Concept approval does not complete those maintenance tasks.
