Product images / FIELD GUIDE
Should reviewers choose the prettiest product image?
Ask what the image communicates before asking which one people like. A reviewer can prefer a dramatic scene while misunderstanding the item, quantity or variant. Keep factual comprehension and visual preference as separate review results.
Ask an unaided question first
For a hypothetical diffuser image, show the candidate without explaining the creative brief. Ask the reviewer what they think is being sold and which pictured objects are included. Their answer can expose a scene ambiguity that a designer familiar with the SKU no longer notices.
Do not lead the reviewer with the intended answer. “Can you see that the stand is optional?” already teaches the distinction. Ask a neutral question and compare the response with the verified order record.
Use a comprehension worksheet
| Question | Record | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| What is for sale? | Reviewer’s own words | Identification |
| What is included? | Named units and extras | Sale-unit understanding |
| Which detail matters? | Observed feature | Useful evidence |
| Which image do you prefer? | Preference and reason | Aesthetic direction |
This is a qualitative review. A few reviewers do not establish a population preference or conversion rate. Report what was observed and avoid numerical generalizations.
Resolve factual errors first
If the scene makes a prop look like part of the bundle, change the composition or nearby explanation. Do not keep the ambiguity because the image receives more preference votes. Review the revised candidate with someone who has not been coached through the previous version.
Keep the two approvals visible
Save a factual approval and a separate style choice. An asset should meet both the product evidence requirement and the intended communication role. Use product review and feedback resolution for the next step.
Two fictional responses require different decisions
The approved facts for this invented diffuser offer are one diffuser, with no decorative tray included. No people were recruited or tested. The following responses illustrate how to record comprehension separately from style.
| Fictional response | Comprehension record | Preference record and action |
|---|---|---|
| A: diffuser and tray are included; likes the dark scene | Sale-unit misunderstanding | Style preference cannot approve the inaccurate implication |
| B: only the diffuser is included; dislikes the dark scene | Correct on the supplied inclusion fact | Style concern remains a separate design decision |
First ask “What do you think comes with this order?” and retain the unaided response before explaining the facts. Only then ask about preferred appearance. A reviewer who has learned the intended answer can help inspect a repair, but that response is not a fresh unaided check. Use a new reviewer for that purpose and record candidate revision, viewing context, neutral prompt and outcome separately. No preference percentage or conversion conclusion follows from this fictional table.
