Product images / QUESTION GUIDE
How do you keep book editions and bindings accurate in AI product scenes?
Use photographs of the actual edition and identify whether the cover shown is a dust jacket, printed board or paperback. Matching cover artwork alone does not establish the binding. A generated hardcover spine, ribbon or page block can turn the scene into an image of a different product.
Identify the edition and format outside the cover art
Use the publisher or authoritative stock record for title, edition, language, format and the applicable identifier. The International ISBN Agency distinguishes formats such as hardback and paperback. An identifier helps match the publication; it is not photographic proof of a jacket, ribbon or a particular copy’s condition.
Obtain actual-edition front, spine and closed-edge views. If the jacket or band is removable, record what is beneath it when that matters to the listing. A flat cover graphic alone does not specify board thickness, spine construction or page edge.
Do not give the paperback the hardback’s features
Fictional example: The Orchard Map has a paperback catalog record B-P and a hardback record B-H. Keep the publisher’s actual identifiers in the real worksheet; B-P and B-H here are invented internal labels, not ISBNs. The two versions share cover artwork, but only the documented hardback example has a removable jacket.
| Proposed image detail | Evidence needed | Decision for a B-P selection |
|---|---|---|
| Rigid board and jacket flap | Actual selected-edition photographs | Do not borrow B-H construction |
| Thick gilded page edge | Actual supplied feature and physical view | Reject an invented decorative feature |
| Ribbon or slipcase | Included-item evidence for this format | Do not infer from a styled composition |
| Page count or paper weight | Publisher/manufacturer record | Do not estimate from generated thickness |
A room scene approved for B-H does not become a B-P image by changing its filename or caption. If the generated book gains a ribbon, tabs or another volume, check whether it changes the order promise even if the title still looks right.
Keep an actual format photograph with the scene
Use a simple setting that leaves distinguishing construction visible. If small spine text or the page edge cannot be preserved accurately, an authorized actual photograph may serve the task better than another generation. Do not treat an invented title reconstruction as exact typesetting.
Separate display props from supplied accessories and volumes. A crop must not remove the only visible distinction between formats while leaving a shared cover image as apparent proof that they are identical. Use inclusion review for those extras.
Check the actual option and its associated image
Select each offered format in the authorized draft-store review and compare its title, identifier and image with the edition record. Shopify’s native variant image is one assigned image with other gallery images separately available; do not assume the whole gallery changes or filters automatically with a format selection.
Keep the selected edition and image revision in the approval note. A correct ISBN or cover does not independently approve physical construction, rights or every store requirement. Use small-lettering review for text. No book, publisher database, store selector or generated scene was tested for this article.

Recorded source-review dates are listed individually below. An undated source does not inherit the article’s publication date. Software and platform rules can change; check the current original before acting.

Frequently asked questions
Is matching cover artwork enough to approve a three-dimensional book scene?
No. Match the edition and format using authoritative records and actual construction photographs.
Does an ISBN prove a pictured ribbon or gilded edge is included?
No. Verify physical extras with evidence for that edition and offer.
Can the same scene be assigned to both paperback and hardback?
Only where it accurately represents the selection and its permitted image role. Do not silently substitute another format’s construction.
