Product images / DECISION CHECK
Can my Etsy personalized listing start with a blank AI product mockup?
For a customized or personalized item, Etsy’s current image policy says the first image must show a finished customized example. A blank product or “Your Text Here” placeholder is not the required first-photo example. Review the exact category and policy exceptions before relying on a mockup.
Classify the listing before choosing the picture
Identify whether you physically make the item, customize it, or sell your original design through a production partner. Etsy’s image policy treats these situations differently. Do not borrow an exception for artwork printed on a base item and apply it to a uniquely designed manufactured product without checking the actual wording.
The policy permits certain computer-generated mockups in additional images and describes production-partner situations. It does not establish a blanket right to use any AI mockup as the first image of every listing. Read the current linked policy with your actual production method in mind.
Apply the current Etsy image policy to the actual task. In a fictional buyer-personalized mug order, the customer supplies a name: use a real finished customized example similar to what will be received for the first image; a blank mug or placeholder-only render does not satisfy that rule. Additional computer-generated mockups may illustrate supported customization options.
A different fictional mug carries the seller’s fixed original artwork printed by a production partner. Etsy describes a stock-photo mockup exception for that original-design-on-a-base-item situation. It separately states that buyer-personalized items must follow the personalized/customized rules. The shared object “mug” therefore does not decide which branch applies. For a uniquely designed manufactured item, the policy calls for a real physical end-product photograph. Keep the actual production method and required evidence beside the first-photo decision; these examples are policy interpretation aids, not approval of an account or listing.
Use representative variation review for truthfully showing ordinary handmade differences. Permission to use a buyer’s review photograph is a separate requirement; do not obtain it by assuming a public review is reusable.
Plan a truthful image sequence
| Image role | Useful evidence | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| First personalized example | Actual finished customized item | Blank object or placeholder-only hero |
| Additional design options | Supported truthful variants | Impossible personalization |
| How to order | Clear editable text or instruction graphic | Confusing mockup for delivered item |
| Material or condition detail | Real evidence of the item | Invented texture or craftsmanship |
Keep photo permissions and product accuracy separate from policy placement. A technically eligible image can still misrepresent what the buyer receives.
Use mockups for the supported decision
For a fictional engraved mug, photograph a genuinely finished customized example for the required first-image role. Use permitted additional mockups to explain a supported text option, and state what the customer can actually customize. Check spelling, placement and available colors against the real production process. Do not display a metallic finish or handle shape the supplier cannot produce.
Keep platform approval external
CartVisual can help explore a scene or feature layout, but it does not verify Etsy eligibility or turn a rendered personalization into a physically completed product. Record the real first-photo source, the policy reviewed and the role of every mockup. Revisit the sequence when the listing or production method changes. Policy compliance, buyer trust and search performance remain separate checks.
