Product images / QUESTION GUIDE

How should handmade product photos show natural variation?

First decide whether the buyer orders one identified handmade piece or a made-to-order range. Keep actual photographs tied to that promise and distinguish intentional variation from a different item or defect. A representative label does not make a generated scene acceptable under every marketplace’s photo rules.

01 / HOW SHOULD HANDMADE PRODUCT PHOTOS SHOW NATURAL VARIATION?

Decide whether this photo represents stock or a range

Fictional ceramic example: cup C17 has a distinctive dark glaze patch; C18 has a different patch and handle. An order for C17 needs evidence of that piece, not the best-looking photograph of C18. A made-to-order range is a different promise and needs an accurate explanation of what may vary.

Have the maker decide which differences are intended variation and which require a condition assessment. Do not treat a crack, changed construction or missing feature as a cosmetic imperfection to smooth away. A generated preview cannot establish actual inventory.

02 / HOW SHOULD HANDMADE PRODUCT PHOTOS SHOW NATURAL VARIATION?

Keep the sample and exact-piece views distinct

View in the invented exampleWhat it can representFailure to catch
Actual C17 photographThe identified piece if that is what shipsC18 or a regenerated ideal cup substituted
Actual representative range sampleDocumented made-to-order appearance with explained variationA sample caption used to excuse an unsupported shape or color
C17 close-upThe visible glaze patch, rim and handleSmoothing away an identifying feature or condition issue
Generated styling conceptOnly a clearly defined permitted illustrative roleTreating it as actual-stock evidence or automatic marketplace permission

If a shop allows selection of exact pieces, match the option ID to its actual photo and stock record. If it offers a variable made-to-order design, do not invent a gallery of generated outcomes and present them as available units.

03 / HOW SHOULD HANDMADE PRODUCT PHOTOS SHOW NATURAL VARIATION?

Check image eligibility before adding atmosphere

For Etsy, the listing image requirements call for original photos of actual finished products, with limited exceptions. Ordinary handmade ceramics do not gain a rendering exception merely by being called handmade or made to order. Do not replace required real photographs with a generated scene and rely on “representative” wording to cure it.

The personalized/customized and production-partner cases have their own specific rules. Check the actual category rather than extending those exceptions to this ordinary cup example. Linking a photo to a variation controls which photo a buyer sees on selection; it does not grant image-policy eligibility or create CartVisual inventory synchronization.

04 / HOW SHOULD HANDMADE PRODUCT PHOTOS SHOW NATURAL VARIATION?

Read the actual listing as one promise

Compare the selected option, title, caption and photographed piece. A C17 selection paired with a C18 image fails even when both are attractive and handmade. If the maker confirms a range, make the allowed variation understandable without suggesting a particular generated patch will ship.

Retain the actual source photo, selection identity and review decision. Use variant proofing for selectable options, condition imagery for condition findings, and the separate personalized-photo check only when that rule actually applies. No shop, stock unit or generated cup was tested here.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Does a representative caption permit a generated Etsy handmade photo?

Do not assume so. Follow the actual-photo requirements and only the exceptions applicable to your item.

Can a generated C17 scene replace evidence of the exact piece?

It is not actual-stock evidence. Preserve the real item photo and check the destination’s permitted role for any illustrative view.

Who decides whether a mark is natural variation or a defect?

Obtain the maker’s actual assessment; an image editor should not decide from appearance alone.
