Logo studio / QUESTION GUIDE
How do you define clear space around a new logo?
Define a measurable exclusion area around the approved logo and test it in real layouts. Clear space controls what may approach the mark; optical alignment controls where the mark appears to sit. Keep those decisions separate so an editor does not reduce breathing room while correcting a visual balance issue.
Define what is measured and protected
Start from the approved master and name the visible-artwork boundary. Choose a stable feature as the reference unit, then state the required separation from nearby text, rules, images or the application edge. Distinguish this exclusion area from unused pixels in the exported file.
IBM’s own guidelines give a defined clear-space rule and discuss alignment separately. That illustrates a documented brand rule; it does not make IBM’s measurement a requirement for your mark. Looka’s application-review guidance is background for trying a design in context, not proof of a correct spacing amount.
Make a fictional rule another editor can calculate
Invented design exercise: master L03 has visible bounds 32 mm wide by 12 mm high. A specifically identified internal feature measures x = 4 mm. The owner proposes clear space of at least x on every side, measured from those visible bounds.
| Application | Calculation in this example | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Full-size artwork | 32 + 2×4 = 40 mm wide; 12 + 2×4 = 20 mm high protected area | Keep neighboring content outside that area |
| Uniform half-size artwork | Visible16×6 mm, x=2 mm; protected20×10 mm | Apply the scaled rule, not the original canvas padding |
| Text only2 mm from the full-size right edge | 2 mm is less than the proposed4 mm | Move the text or revise the application with approval |
| Transparent export with extra padding | File bounds may differ from visible bounds | Use the documented unit, not an unexplained canvas edge |
These dimensions are fictional, not an approved guideline or tested minimum for a real logo. They make the proposed rule reproducible. If the owner chooses a fixed minimum or a different rule for a small version, document that decision instead of silently changing the formula.
Preserve the exclusion area during alignment
A whole-mark optical move can improve balance while changing the distance to a nearby border. Recheck the protected area after moving the mark; do not call that move permission to crowd it. Internal spacing, alignment targets and external exclusion are separate decisions.
Try the intended label and header with actual neighboring content. If the proposed space cannot fit, review the layout, lockup or authorized application version. Do not stretch the mark or waive the rule merely because one template is crowded.
Deliver the measured rule with the correct master
Have the external designer provide a labeled diagram showing the visible bounds, exact reference feature, protected area and a prohibited intrusion. Explain whether export padding already includes the rule. Include the master revision so a changed symbol cannot keep an obsolete unit unnoticed.
Logo studio explores concepts; it does not automatically enforce spacing inside other software or deliver a refined vector guideline. Use optical alignment for perceived placement and template boundaries for reuse. No layout, logo or spacing test was executed here.

Frequently asked questions
Is transparent padding automatically the clear-space rule?
No. Define the visible bounds, reference unit and treatment of padding in the handoff.
Can optical alignment reduce the required exclusion space?
Recheck the actual distances after moving the mark. An alignment adjustment does not waive the approved exclusion rule.
Should every brand use the same amount?
No. Define and test the actual mark’s proposed rule and any application-specific version.
