Assets & tasks / FIELD GUIDE
Should a product email use a GIF or link to a video?
Use email motion as a preview, then provide a reliable path to the full product information. A GIF, a linked poster and an embedded player have different delivery behavior. Check the current email tool and real test message before choosing.
Choose what the email needs to communicate
For an illustrative case-opening clip, the email may only need to invite a reader to watch the demonstration on a product page. A clear linked poster can serve that task without carrying the entire motion sequence. If animation is essential to the preview, inspect its first frame and a no-animation state.
Shopify documents image and GIF sections for its messaging templates. That does not mean every email client will play every media format identically. Use the publishing tool’s current capabilities and test the delivered message.
Compare delivery candidates
| Candidate | Useful role | Inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Linked poster | Simple invitation to watch | Destination and first view |
| GIF preview | Short visual cue | First frame, size and clarity |
| Native email text | Essential product message | Readable without images |
| Landing-page video | Full clip and alternatives | Player behavior |
A GIF preview should not be the only place where the offer or a necessary condition appears. Keep that information in native text.
Prepare the preview externally
If you convert a generated clip into a GIF, do it in an external editor and review the frame selection. Avoid a blank or misleading first frame. Reduce decorative motion when it makes the product harder to recognize or the message unnecessarily heavy.
Inspect a real delivery
Use the email platform’s authorized test-send workflow and check the message on representative clients. Inspect blocked images and the clicked destination too. CartVisual does not convert clips to email GIFs or send campaigns automatically. Read silent communication and public media hosting for the handoff.
Keep the invitation usable in three delivery states
Invented case-opening email: the GIF starts with an empty background. Replace it with an informative approved first frame or use a linked poster. The email’s native text says which product is shown and what the watch link opens. No GIF conversion, account configuration or message send occurred here.
| State to inspect in an authorized test | What remains understandable | What needs its own check |
|---|---|---|
| Animation plays | Short preview identifies the item | Full destination and final media |
| Only a static frame appears | Approved first frame communicates the product | Do not infer every client plays the GIF |
| Images are blocked | Native product name, essential conditions and descriptive watch link | Actual delivered message and clicked destination |
Shopify documents distinct template sections; their presence does not prove identical embedded video behavior across email clients. A decorative play symbol must not be the only explanation of the destination. Preserve the actual file/message revision and client observations after a real authorized test, rather than replacing those observations with a template-editor preview.
