Will blank CSV cells erase product information when I update the copy?
A blank imported field and a column that is absent can have different effects. For eligible non-required Shopify fields, an overwrite import can replace an existing value with a blank, while an omitted column can retain it. Decide the intended action for each field before importing.
Write the change request before editing cells
In this fictional case, a small store wants to replace the description of one desk tray. The exported row also contains a vendor value and an image reference. A writer clears unfamiliar cells to make the sheet tidy. The resulting sheet no longer expresses a copy-only request; those empty cells may have a separate update meaning.
Start from a fresh authorized export and keep it unchanged as a record. In a separate working copy, label the intended operation for each field: replace, deliberately clear or leave unchanged. Do not use blank cells as a substitute for not knowing what the column does.
Build a field action map
| Field in fictional tray record | Intended action | Evidence to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Description | Replace with approved copy | Old and new text |
| Vendor | Leave unchanged | Current vendor value |
| Image reference | Leave unchanged | Current approved asset |
| Obsolete optional text | Clear only if authorized | Explicit deletion approval |
The official Shopify CSV guide explains overwrite behavior and field dependencies. Check the current schema for the exact columns you are using. Removing a column casually can also be unsafe when another included field depends on it. A compact spreadsheet is useful only when it still describes the intended update accurately.
In the current schema, the update keys include URL handle and Title. Keep them distinct from optional fields. For an overwrite of a matching product, Shopify documents a blank optional Vendor cell clearing that value, while leaving the optional Vendor column out preserves it. This is a field-specific rule, not permission to omit required or dependent columns.
| Fictional working-file state | Intended result | Check before approval |
|---|---|---|
| Description contains approved revision C2 | Replace old copy | Correct existing handle, title and reviewed overwrite setting. |
| Optional Vendor column absent | Preserve existing vendor | No other included operation changes the intended scope. |
| Vendor column present with an empty cell | Deliberately clear vendor | Specific deletion approval exists; empty is not shorthand for unknown. |
| A dependent field remains but its companion columns disappear | No safe copy-only conclusion | Resolve the documented dependency before submitting. |
Pilot the smallest approved update
- Confirm the store, matching product identifier and overwrite choice.
- Prepare the working file using the current exported schema and approved field actions.
- Import only the authorized pilot record through the normal store workflow.
- Re-export that record and compare changed and unchanged fields.
For the fictional tray, the expected difference is the description. The vendor and product media should still match the preserved record. If an unexpected blank appears, stop the wider update and investigate the pilot. Do not restore an old entire catalog over current orders, inventory or unrelated changes.
Compare a fresh post-pilot export with the preserved pre-pilot record field by field. A changed description and a changed vendor are two changes even if the importer reports success. Check for intervening authorized edits before restoring any value; an older export is evidence of the earlier state, not automatically the desired current state.
Keep a useful approval record
Save the working file, its field action map and the post-import comparison. The approval should identify exactly which text changed and who authorized any deletion. This allows the next reviewer to distinguish a deliberate empty value from a missed specification or a spreadsheet-cleanup mistake.
Use the copy release review CSV as a manual review record. Sample rows are fictional. It does not connect to, import into or modify an external store or production machine.
CartVisual does not execute this import or connect to the store. Its approved creative copy is an input to your external publishing workflow. Completion means the new description is present and the intended untouched fields remain intact. A successfully accepted file alone does not close the review.
The shared review CSV has only two fictional pending examples, for a mug description and a cup title. Its field values are review labels and may use older wording; they are not current Shopify import headers. Add your own field action and actual observation to a copy. Keep the importer file separate. See variant-column dependencies before removing options from an otherwise smaller file.

Frequently asked questions
Is a blank cell always harmless?
No. Check the destination field and overwrite rules before using it.
Should I simply delete all unrelated columns?
Review dependencies first; some included fields require companion columns.
What proves a copy-only update worked?
A comparison showing the approved text changed and the intended preserved values did not.
