Product images / PRODUCTION GUIDE
Can AI upscaling invent product details that were never in the photo?
AI upscaling can make an image look clearer while adding a texture or character the source never established. Review the changed details against the real product, especially when the input is blurry. More pixels are useful for delivery, but they do not prove that a sharper seam, label or surface is authentic.
Define what the source actually establishes
Open the untouched photograph and identify which product details can be read confidently. Mark the boundary between visible evidence and uncertainty. A blurred label may establish its position and color without establishing every character. A small patch of fabric may establish a general weave without resolving each thread. Keep that uncertainty visible in the approval notes.
For a hypothetical canvas pouch, record the readable brand mark, zipper position, stitch line and surface texture. If the source cannot distinguish a stitched line from a printed line, obtain another photograph before using a magnified view to explain construction. Enhancement should not become the process that decides what the product is made from.
Check the external tool’s editing intent
Read the description of the specific mode before using an external enhancer. Some modes aim to improve clarity, while others reinterpret the scene more extensively. Photoroom distinguishes Enhance, Transform and Reimagine, including modes that may add textures or objects. The names illustrate why an upscale label alone does not describe every change.
Choose the least interpretive operation suitable for the delivery need and retain the original. Treat the result as a candidate, even when the tool describes preservation as its goal. In the current Product images request, the resolution selection is passed with an image-generation job. That setting is not evidence that blurred source information was recovered. This article’s upscaling comparison takes place in the chosen external tool.
Photoroom’s help describes adding plausible detail while increasing pixels. Its Enhance wording expresses a content-preservation aim; Transform can introduce textures or objects and Reimagine is more interpretive. At this check, the latter two are mobile modes. These are mode descriptions, not our observed success rates or proof that any newly sharp character is correct. Read the exact mode you use rather than treating every tool labeled upscale as equivalent.
Use a detail ledger instead of a sharpness score
Compare source and enhanced file at matching visible scale before examining the enlarged output. A dramatically bigger display can make added detail seem convincing simply because it is easy to inspect. Create a row for each merchandise detail that changed, identifying the real reference that confirms it. When no reference confirms a new detail, keep it unresolved.
| Detail | Potential invented change | Evidence needed |
|---|---|---|
| Brand lettering | A plausible but different character | Readable approved label or artwork |
| Stitching | Extra rows or a different stitch path | Actual construction close-up |
| Surface | Smooth plastic becomes grainy leather | Photograph of the real finish |
| Zipper | Teeth or pull shape redesigned | Clear view of the actual hardware |
The ledger prioritizes product meaning rather than apparent crispness.
Fictional pouch P3 has a blurred source S1, current readable label close-up L1 spelling “MÍRA,” and construction close-up Z1 showing a plain zipper pull. Enhanced candidate E1 is sharper but spells “MIRA” and adds an engraved mark to the pull. L1 supports rejecting the missing accent; Z1 supports rejecting the new engraving. An old “MIRA” artwork file from P2 cannot authorize that edit to P3. If no current L1 existed, the spelling would remain unresolved rather than being approved by E1’s confidence.
Decide whether to keep, correct or reshoot
Keep an externally enhanced version when the useful clarity improvement preserves the evidence-bearing details after comparison. Route a small exact lettering correction to an appropriate external editor only when approved artwork exists and the workflow can preserve the surrounding product. If the new detail cannot be checked, use the original or obtain a better source rather than approving an attractive guess.
Do not repeatedly apply stronger enhancement to a blurry patch in the hope that several plausible interpretations will reveal the truth. A zipper tooth count or material grain that changes between outputs is a reason to inspect the item, not average the candidates. Keep a genuine close-up for purchasing questions whose answer depends on those details.
Approve the delivered view and preserve its lineage
View the finished image at the normal destination size and, where relevant, in its zoom view. Check that sharper edges have not produced distracting halos or a false finish. Save the untouched source, the external mode used, the chosen result and the ledger with the asset. Avoid replacing the only source file with the enhanced version.
Use the pixel delivery guide to establish dimensions and the label guide for exact lettering. This review concerns invented merchandise information, not choosing the cheapest resolution option. A file can satisfy a display requirement and still need rejection because its newly visible detail describes the wrong item.
In the P3 record, keep E1 separate from S1 even if the original is never published. A label correction supported by L1 must still be checked at the actual display size; it does not authenticate E1’s invented zipper texture. If the original is too weak for the required zoom view, obtain a better real close-up instead of presenting generated micro-detail as a macro photograph. No pouch, enhancement result or lettering repair was tested for this example.

Frequently asked questions
Does a sharper label mean the original wording was recovered?
No. Compare the characters with readable approved evidence; plausible letters may have been generated.
Does selecting a higher generation resolution recover the source?
No. The current Product images resolution setting requests a generated output. Verify new details against current real references; use a separate external enhancement workflow when that is the task.
Should I always avoid AI upscaling?
No. It can help delivery, but keep the source and verify details that matter to the product.
