Product images / DECISION GUIDE

Why is an image’s aspect ratio different from its pixel resolution?

Choose the required shape and pixel dimensions separately, then inspect the actual returned file and destination crop. A resolution tier is not an exact canvas promise. Use crop arithmetic to see whether the product will survive a new placement before paying for more pixels.

01 / WHY IS AN IMAGE’S ASPECT RATIO DIFFERENT FROM ITS PIXEL RESOLUTION?

Describe the box and the product area separately

Start with the destination: a square collection tile, a portrait story or a wide banner. Record the image box and how the destination fits or crops a source. Then mark the product boundaries that must remain visible. A larger source can still lose a handle or label when the box has the wrong shape.

Shopify defines aspect ratio as width relative to height and explains that some theme sections crop images to their display area. That is the destination’s behavior, not a promise that CartVisual will prepare every theme-specific crop. Use composition adaptation when the relationship between product and copy must change.

02 / WHY IS AN IMAGE’S ASPECT RATIO DIFFERENT FROM ITS PIXEL RESOLUTION?

Check the arithmetic before enlarging the file

Example sourceWidth ÷ heightMeaning
1000 × 1000 px1Square
2000 × 2000 px1Same shape; four times as many pixels
1200 × 1500 px0.84:5 portrait
1600 × 900 pxAbout 1.77816:9 landscape

These are arithmetic examples, not destination minimums or delivered-size promises. Doubling both sides keeps the ratio and multiplies total pixels by four. It does not prove sharper original label information, correct geometry or a better composition.

03 / WHY IS AN IMAGE’S ASPECT RATIO DIFFERENT FROM ITS PIXEL RESOLUTION?

Use a crop example to locate the actual loss

In a fictional H3 headphone asset, the source is 1200 × 1500 px. A centered 1200 × 1200 crop removes 300 px of height: 150 from the top and 150 from the bottom. If the headband begins only 60 px below the source’s top edge, that crop removes 90 px of the product at the top. More resolution at the same framing preserves the same proportional problem.

Choose a fitted presentation with appropriate surrounding space, a different crop position if the whole required item survives, or a separately composed square. Stretching the source to 1200 × 1200 changes the headphones’ proportions. Do not use stretching to hide the conflict. These dimensions describe an invented exercise; no image was edited or generated for it.

04 / WHY IS AN IMAGE’S ASPECT RATIO DIFFERENT FROM ITS PIXEL RESOLUTION?

Treat the selector and the returned file as different records

Current image submissions carry an aspect ratio and a resolution selection separately. The current higher-resolution path, and the Gemini image path, check the returned long edge and ratio before storing success. That check does not require one exact width/height pair for every response. A selected 4K tier is not a promise of a 4096 × 4096 square regardless of the chosen shape.

Open the actual download and read its dimensions and format. Compare its product details with the authoritative source even if the pixel check passed. A count of pixels cannot certify lettering, material or component accuracy. Follow a resolution decision based on the actual placement rather than treating the tier label as approval.

05 / WHY IS AN IMAGE’S ASPECT RATIO DIFFERENT FROM ITS PIXEL RESOLUTION?

Investigate the stored file and the displayed version separately

If the original is large and clear but a collection tile is blurred, inspect the image actually served in that tile and its crop. If the original itself lacks needed pixels, address that source/export limitation. Those are different problems; another unrelated generation may solve neither.

Keep an external handoff record for the original, square derivative, actual pixel size, format and approved placement. When an exact canvas is required, prepare it in an appropriate editor and recheck the downloaded export. A file that fits the box must still show the correct item, and a correct file still needs its destination checked.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Does 1:1 mean 1024 × 1024 pixels?

No. It means equal width and height. Many pixel dimensions have that shape.

Will more pixels prevent my destination from cropping the product?

No. Check the crop and product boundaries. A higher-resolution version with the same framing can lose the same proportion of the item.

Does a successful 4K request prove the packaging text is correct?

No. Output pixel checks and factual image review are separate. Verify the actual wording and geometry.
