How do I update the same product after rewriting its title?
Keep the existing matching product identifier separate from the new customer-facing title. Shopify uses the handle to match an overwrite import. Verify that the copy update targets the existing record before changing its URL or creating a product with a different identifier.
Separate wording from record identity
A fictional shop changes “Oak Desk Tray” to “Oak Desk Tray — Small.” The copy editor also replaces the exported handle with a newly suggested phrase. The intended task was to clarify the title, but the working file now asks the importer to interpret a different record identity.
Keep the handle from the current authorized export beside the approved title. If a URL change is truly wanted, make it a separate reviewed task with the store owner. A language model can suggest clearer wording; it cannot infer which existing record your importer should overwrite from the new wording alone.
Prepare a matching record card
| Value | Role | Fictional check |
|---|---|---|
| Existing handle | Matching identity | oak-desk-tray remains unchanged |
| New title | Buyer-facing wording | Small is supported by the catalog |
| Description version | Approved content | Copy revision C2 |
| Store and locale | Update destination | Authorized global store |
| Import choice | Update behavior | Matching overwrite deliberately selected |
Use the current Shopify import documentation, not a hand-built template guessed from the title. Its matching-handle behavior distinguishes an update from a skipped matching row. Do not try to solve an ignored row by inventing another handle; first inspect the intended import choice.
Use the exact URL handle from the current export and include the required Title for this update. An old template may use older header names, so inspect the actual exported schema rather than renaming columns from memory. Keep the new title in the title field; do not generate a replacement handle just to make its wording agree.
Verify one existing product
- Find the existing record in the correct store and preserve its current export.
- Compare the working identifier with that record character by character.
- Review the import summary and use your authorized pilot workflow.
- Open the same record afterward and check its title, description and page URL.
In the fictional example, the reviewer expects one tray record with a clearer title, not a second tray listing. Compare the catalog before and after using your normal store tools. If another record appears unexpectedly, stop and ask the store owner to resolve it before repeating the larger import.
Shopify documents that a matching handle is ignored when the overwrite option is not selected. A skipped row therefore does not establish that the handle is wrong. If the working handle differs from the original, stop and review the identity request instead of repeatedly importing variants of the guessed identifier.
| Fictional observation | Next evidence | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Existing handle; row ignored | Actual import choice and reported row result | Resolve the update setting; do not invent another identity. |
| New title on the same existing record | Retained record mapping, actual page URL and description | Approve only the intended wording scope. |
| A second tray product appears | Pre/post record list and submitted handle | Hold the batch; owner resolves the extra record before another import. |
Hand off identity with the approved copy
Record the stable matching value, old and new title, reviewer and result. A writer delivering only a polished title leaves the importer to reconstruct identity, which is unnecessary work and an avoidable source of ambiguity. Make that mapping part of the approved handoff.
Retain a separate plan if the owner later wants to change URLs or restructure the catalog. This guide covers a copy update, not a complete migration or redirect implementation. CartVisual does not change Shopify records. The useful result is a verified new title on the intended existing product with its record mapping understood.
Record the stable store/product mapping and, where the authorized store tools expose it, the underlying product identifier. Keep variant mappings separate; a matching product handle alone does not verify every variant survived. Use blank versus absent field review for preservation and treat any later URL/redirect change as its own approved operation.

Frequently asked questions
Does a new title require a new handle?
Keep record identity separate; a URL change is a distinct store-owner decision.
Why was a matching row ignored?
Check the import settings and the documented matching behavior before changing identifiers.
Can AI infer the matching record from a title?
Do not rely on it. Supply the current authorized record mapping.
