Product images / FIELD GUIDE
Which details belong first in a product title?
Put the information needed to identify the sale item ahead of decorative phrases. Start with product type and meaningful variant details, then add brand or model terms as the destination requires. Do not promise a ranking gain from one universal title formula.
Find the title’s identification burden
Consider a fictional range with two visually similar pouches sold in different capacities. A title that starts with “Meet your new everyday favorite” delays the distinction. A title that names the pouch and the verified capacity helps the buyer choose. Decide which fields actually change the order before polishing tone.
Read the title beside the thumbnail and selected option. If the thumbnail cannot show the distinguishing attribute, the title carries more of that burden. If a variant selector already supplies it reliably, review whether repeating every field makes the title harder to scan.
Build and compare title candidates
| Candidate role | Include | Inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Identification | Product type | Can a new reader name the item? |
| Variant distinction | Verified size or version | Can they choose correctly? |
| Brand recognition | Approved brand or model | Is the name accurate? |
| Optional character | Relevant descriptive phrase | Does it delay identification? |
Keep a stable internal SKU separately. A technical inventory identifier is useful for operations but may not explain the product to a shopper.
| Fictional wording | Identification consequence | Review boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Meet your new everyday favorite travel pouch, in the larger option | The difference follows a long opening | Use the verified capacity or option name. |
| Travel pouch — 1 L — slate | Names one option early | Use only if that SKU supports all three details. |
| Travel pouch — 2 L — slate | Distinguishes the other capacity | Check the matching photograph and option mapping. |
These capacities and color are invented teaching inputs. A model code may matter more to a specific buyer than a descriptive phrase. Choose order from the identification task rather than copying this punctuation everywhere.
Test truncation honestly
Preview the title in the actual destination at phone width. Note what disappears when it is shortened by the interface. Move an essential difference earlier rather than relying on a buyer to expand the text. Do not assert a fixed character limit unless you have checked that destination’s current documentation.
Retain the complete stored title and what the real card displays. Visual truncation does not prove stored data was lost. Include any nearby reliable option label in the observation. If the difference disappears from both, correct wording or presentation.
Google’s current product-title specification limits its field to 150 characters and requires variant distinction. That is a Google attribute rule, not a universal storefront limit. AI-authored feed titles also need the required structured origin mapping.
Approve title and option together
Select each option and read the resulting title, price and image as one order promise. Reject a title that implies a pair when the product is sold singly. Use bundle evidence and destination and language planning for related decisions.
Approve title, sale unit, image and selected option together while retaining catalog identity. No real card or feed comparison was performed for these teaching alternatives. Use the controlled CSV copy-update handoff when replacing text through that workflow.
A title truncation exercise
Compare two fictional titles for different pouch capacities. In one, a long atmospheric opening appears before the capacity; in the other, the product type and approved capacity appear early. View both in the real phone card and record which essential details remain visible. Do not infer a search-ranking advantage from this inspection. It establishes only whether the buyer can identify the option in that placement. If the destination uses a separate reliable variant label, include that context in the review rather than evaluating the title as an isolated string.
