Why does pasted product copy have odd colors or spill outside the page?
First compare the same words with and without the copied formatting in a draft product. Inherited HTML or inline styling can cause a local display problem. Clear the unwanted formatting, rebuild necessary structure and inspect the storefront before deciding that the entire theme needs repair.
Locate the smallest affected area
A fictional mug description is readable in a document but appears pale and unusually wide after pasting into a store. Another description in the same template looks normal. That difference gives the reviewer a useful starting point: isolate the pasted block rather than immediately changing every product page.
Shopify warns that copied HTML can create storefront display errors. Its rich text editor offers formatting controls and an HTML view. This does not establish the cause of your particular defect. Save the original description and a screenshot, then compare a clean-text version in a draft record under the same theme.
Compare text and presentation separately
| Observation | Focused inspection | Repair to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Only pasted paragraph is pale | Inherited text styling | Clear its formatting |
| One table is too wide | Table structure and widths | Rebuild a simpler native table |
| All descriptions overflow | Shared template behavior | Ask the theme maintainer |
| Words disappear after saving | Saved content versus preview | Check the retained text |
Do not erase approved wording simply to remove a visual defect. The fictional mug still needs its verified capacity and care instruction. Keep those sentences in the clean-text comparison, so a shorter block does not accidentally appear to solve an unrelated width problem.
Use a small controlled comparison before changing the theme. In this fictional mug exercise, retain the exact approved sentence “Includes one 350 mL mug; wash by hand.” Make a preserved original block A and a clean-text draft block B with those identical words, under the same template, viewport and zoom. The invented capacity and care statement are exercise inputs, not recommendations for a real product.
If B fits and A does not, the difference supports further inspection of the copied formatting or structure. It does not identify a particular CSS rule by itself. If both fail, retain that result and investigate shared styling or another cause. Do not call a shorter description a successful format-only fix when required words or a table column were removed.
Repair a draft before the live page
- Duplicate or otherwise preserve the current approved description using your normal store workflow.
- Clear formatting on the affected draft block and rebuild required emphasis with native editor controls.
- If HTML inspection is necessary, ask a competent maintainer to review the specific block.
- Save, reload and inspect both phone and desktop layouts.
Test nearby paragraphs too. An unclosed structure or an oversized table can affect content after the pasted block. Keep the repair scoped to the observable defect; do not run an AI-generated script or replace theme code merely because the copy came from a model.
In Shopify’s rich-text editor, clearing formatting and inspecting HTML are distinct tools. Recheck required links, list structure, table information and approved wording after either operation; removing a text style does not prove all unwanted HTML or wide structural elements are gone. Use the owner’s authorized draft/preview workflow, preserving the live record until the repair is approved.
If the symptom is literal Markdown markers rather than inherited color or width, follow the Markdown-to-editor handoff. Keep any factual edit separate, with its own approval, from this presentation repair.
Define the completed repair
For the fictional mug, the text should remain inside the content area, follow the intended store typography and retain every approved fact. A reviewer should read the capacity, included contents and care sentence in the saved storefront. Record the repaired draft and the exact approved text alongside the screenshot.
Once that comparison passes, apply the same reviewed block to the intended live record and check again. If the defect persists with clean text, hand the evidence to the theme maintainer. CartVisual supplies creative candidates, not a Shopify theme repair service. The result of this workflow is a verified publishing format rather than a new benefit claim.

Frequently asked questions
Should I change the whole theme first?
Start with the smallest affected block and compare clean text under the same template.
Can clearing formatting remove useful structure?
Yes. Rebuild necessary headings, lists and links deliberately afterward.
Is an HTML view a proof of correct rendering?
No. Save and inspect the shopper-facing page too.
