Should you test a new ad design when the phone preview is broken?

Verify that each candidate is delivered correctly before comparing creative performance. A clipped headline or wrong variant can turn the experiment into a test of implementation errors. Keep a delivery approval beside the creative approval.

01 / SHOULD YOU TEST A NEW AD DESIGN WHEN THE PHONE PREVIEW IS BROKEN?

Inspect the actual placement

For a fictional product poster comparison, preview both candidates in the intended phone placement. Include captions, buttons and surrounding controls. A source canvas with generous margins may still lose its headline when the publisher crops it differently. A screenshot from an editing tool is not the final placement.

Record the file and layout actually shown. If one candidate is sharper because a larger rendition was requested, that difference belongs in delivery review before it is credited to a better composition.

02 / SHOULD YOU TEST A NEW AD DESIGN WHEN THE PHONE PREVIEW IS BROKEN?

Separate defects from hypotheses

The sheet prevents a failed implementation from being called an audience preference. It also preserves real creative differences for a later interpretable comparison.

03 / SHOULD YOU TEST A NEW AD DESIGN WHEN THE PHONE PREVIEW IS BROKEN?

Retest the repaired delivery

Check the smallest supported layout, the default option and any campaign-selected variant. Use the same practical quality standard for all candidates. If a destination cannot show the design reliably, adapt the composition or choose another delivery method.

04 / SHOULD YOU TEST A NEW AD DESIGN WHEN THE PHONE PREVIEW IS BROKEN?

Record the comparison boundary

State which defects were removed and which creative variable remains. Do not reuse performance numbers from the broken version as if they came from the repaired asset. Use cross-channel preflight and ratio and pixels for delivery planning.

05 / SHOULD YOU TEST A NEW AD DESIGN WHEN THE PHONE PREVIEW IS BROKEN?

Repair A-v1, then approve A-v2 as a different delivery

Fictional candidate A-v1 places a headline under phone controls; B-v1 keeps it visible. A-v1 fails delivery review. Move the headline and save A-v2, then inspect A-v2 at the real destination. This is a proposed example, not a phone test that was performed.

Changing the uploaded file while retaining the same public URL does not make old observations belong to the repaired bytes. Save the upload/revision time and report boundary. If a later comparison also changes offer or audience, disclose those variables. Shopify documents theme-dependent presentation; it does not prove that either of these fictional candidates was delivered or tested.
